I run workshops in soapstone carving for individuals, small and
large groups. I guide people through the process from a piece of
rough stone, through shaping and polishing to achieve a finished
piece. This can be done with files called ‘riflers’ or with hammer
and chisels, depending on the size of the stone and the desired
effect. First I selected a piece of stone, then carve out a rough shape.
This can then be smoothed with finer riflers. If I need to define
depth I use paint in different colours.
I then polish the soapstone with sandpaper and water. A lot of
care has to be taken with this part of the process so as not to put
scratches back into my work. Finally I oil and polish the stone.

If you would like to attend a workshop, book me to run a workshop or
just go on my mailing list please feel free to
contact me.
I also work in clay and plaster. I model in clay often using an
armature inner structure. When the piece is finished I make a mould
and then take a cast of the mould. I make my moulds in plaster if I
only want one piece or silicone if I want many. When I have
made a
silicone mould I then make a glass fibre jacket to support it. When
the mould is finished it can be filled in many ways.
Cold Casting - I use metal powders like bronze, copper,
slate, marble, iron etc mixed in resin and
backed with glass fibre.
When removed from the mould these can then be patinated using
chemicals which effect the metals.
Plaster Casting - I can fill a mould with a special kind
of plaster. There are different polymers that
can be added to give
greater strength and weather better. These can then be painted with
oils or acrylics and varnished.
Plaster Carving - It is also possible to carve plaster by
making it in small batches, laying it on
and carving it off when it
has reached the right setting point. It can be kept as one unique
piece and painted or a mould can also be made from this.
If you would like to consider psychotherapy you can contact me and make an appointment for a session for us to meet and explore our potential for working together.
